White Flower Sgraffito Ornament by Janet MacPherson

Carved ceramic wall piece in black and white.  Approx. 2.5 x 1".

My work is made using a slip-casting method, in which liquid porcelain is poured into a plaster mould. Once removed the objects are covered in black underglaze, and then using a technique called sgraffito, I hand carve the drawing to reveal the white clay underneath. The imagery is inspired by historic renderings of plants and animals, which serve as metaphors for our relationships with others and how understand ourselves.
