The national competition is based on technical excellence, ingenuity, and strength of creative vision. One of a kind, production prototypes, jewellery and objects are considered equally. Students from across Canada are invited to compete. .

Each year, five student Finalists win placement in the Competition Exhibition held post-graduation at L. A. Pai Gallery. The primary prize is a solo exhibition opportunity at the gallery the following year, with award funds donated by generous gallery patrons.
